If we really believe in "supporting our troops" then it needs to be a multi-faceted approach. Not just a verbal slap on the back. And the first thing is to not send them into a conflict that is none of our business. I am a firm believer that no people will endure oppression forever. At some point they will find a way to change it. It is their right and their responsibility to do so. To tell their own government, what it is that they should be doing or not doing. Just as we should be doing in this country. Placing troops into harms way, only if asked to, not to make another country how we think it should be. If we can help make others lives better in some way, as an equal, then we have a certain moral responsibility to do so. To help make their lives better, according to what they feel appropriate for them, not us.
And if the decision is made to send troops into harms way, then do it for the shortest time possible, to resolve the immediate conflict. Leaving only enough to protect what needs protecting for the shortest time possible. Then to be replaced with those that can assist with food and water supply, medical help, infrastructure improvements, housing, jobs, etc. This is where the good feelings and value to others lie, in making their lives better according to the culture that they reside in.
And after the facts of conflict, then supply our troops with whatever they may need for as long as they need, to resume a healthy civilian life.
