Hello Jack,
On reading about Phobias ... I've developed a very strange one ... I cannot now drive over a very high bridge... I will drive out of my way to avoid doing so...???? Why has this happened ...

Your fear is something like mine, I have a general fear of heights. I know the exact moment when it originated as it is burned into my memory - one of my earliest memories in fact. I was about four and slipped near the stair railing on the 3 floor of an apartment building. Since I was so small I went right under the hand rail and just barely managed to hang on. Fortunately I had already rung the doorbell and my friend's father quickly grabbed me and pulled me back to the floor. Even though I know the cause of my fear, I can't seem to do anything to shake it. Interestingly, I have no problem flying...

Question Jack...
Why has this developed now at this age ... I don't remember having this fear before... and yes I hate to fly ...
The only thing I remember as a child was the family was in Yosemite and my father was holding me... he went to the edge to look at a large waterfall and my mother started screaming for him to move back ... I can still see the waterfall and the vapor it gave off ... I thought it so beautiful...

Dear Glo, thanks for posting in. Remembering the primary event is half the battle. Especially when we are young we internalize the experience and all the emotional content associated with it. When we later confront any situation with a sufficent amount of reminders it trigger off that original distress, even if we don't remember how it felt.
Why it should wait this long to "activate" is a matter of so many psychological factors, I'd have to know so much more about the events and how you generally function, psychologically, to venture a reason, Our minds (brain) are so complex and phenomenal, we've yet to understand their function fully.
